If the target is in range of another unit’s flak range, the other unit will also use their flak stat to reduce the damage dealt. There is a second effect to this type of defense though. Flak will try to intercept incoming missiles and reduce damage before impact. The only way to counter this is the 3rd defensive mechanism in this game: Flak. Missiles and rockets are not being absorbed by shields and deal high damage, even to armored targets. There is also a long range physical weapon, but with limited ammo. The latter fires multiple shots that are more likely to hit targets with high evasion at the cost of firepower. The former is an all-or-nothing shot with high firepower. Each weapon has also 2 sub types, being the high power shot or the spray approach. Kinetic weapons are better at short range, ignore shields but damage gets reduced by armor. Energy weapons pierce armor but get absorbed by shields. Energy weapons have higher accuracy at long range, but lower firepower. There are 2 major weapon types: Energy and Kinetic. Weapons and stats work with a rock-paper-scissors system (like most strategic games). “IMMA FIRIN’ MAH LAZOR” – Asaga, pilot of the Black Jack Some of the dialogue seems to change depending on what you did in the past though. Although there are some choices given to the player to advance the dialogue, there aren’t any drastical consequences in gameplay. Some of these dialogues result in funny scenes, but there’s also a certain amount of seriousness added in when the characters talk about the war and its cruel consequences. This is where the VN part revolves around: getting to know your (female) grunts, learn who they are, what they like and why they fight. Fire Emblem has some unit intimacy, but not so much towards the player. In Advance Wars you wouldn’t care about the driver of the tank that just got blown up. But unlike most strategy games, you get to talk not only to the high command but also to the pilots. The story’s basic principles are the same as most space adventures: Some force is threatening us and we are fighting back. Being the only surviving crew from the assault, captain Shields & co are now working as freelancers in order to gain funding and allies to fight back against PACT and reclaim his home planet. Seeing as the odds are heavily against him, he escapes the sector using the Sunriders warp drive. As he’s about to launch the Sunrider for a test ride, Shields and his home planet is being assaulted by PACT, an army who wants to take over the entire universe. You play as captain Kayto Shields who just got assigned to the new prototype space battleship ‘Sunrider’. Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius is a mashup of an anime-VN and a turnbased strategy game made on the Ren’Py engine. This time I’ll be taking a look at another Visual novel-hybrid game.
